‘Bride Rovers Abu’

During the last week of August  1932 as Bride Rovers were training for their third East Cork Junior Final in a row- they won in 1930 v Leeside and lost the 1931 Final to Aghada, team member and Board Delegate Billy Barry, wrote a few verses in praise of the Club. In his own words “It was intended mainly As a bit of a morale booster for the players and I did not expect it would last more than the short life of  these ‘come all ye’s, a year or two” On Sunday August 28th in Midleton Bride Rovers beat Leeside in the Final  once more, by 4 6 to  2 3. Billy played in the half forward line. After the victory the Bride Rovers players and supporters celebrated in Power’s Hotel in Midleton and there on that evening ‘Bride Rovers Abu’ was first heard when Billy started with “Come, listen a while; I will tell you the story/Of heroes and hurlers well tested and tried…..” I recall talking to Billy about the song half a century later and he was astounded and delighted that it had become the Club Anthem’. Down the years t’s been heard at home and abroad. Then last Sunday from the County Carlow came more news of Bride Rovers Abu. A five year old gelding bearing that name won a Point to Point race in Borris – the second win for the horse this season. Owned by the Baltimore Stable Syndicate I was anxious to find out how the name came about. I rang Mary Doyle on Monday and she told me hat Eoin Linehan from Bartlemy -who hurled with Bride Rovers, had worked in their yard when the horse was being named! So that’s how Bride Rovers Abu came about far away from the Banks of The Bride. Bought as a ‘store’ for €20,000 anyone who would now like to buy the animal for multiples of that sum, just let me know and I’ll do the bidding.

 UNDER 12 REPORT.

The Under 12s resumed training  on February 24th and a great turnout has been seen in the first week back. The lads are being introduced to some very basic strength and conditioning training for the first time and we'd like to thank Kevin Murphy for his guidance and running of these sessions. The lads have sore muscles where they didn't know they had muscles! It’s all to help them enjoy the games and improve their range of skills. We will continue in the astro for a few weeks to allow the lads to develop their skills in wall-ball sessions. New player are always very welcome to come along.

 SCOR.

When Scor was started back in 1969/1970 it was to fill a void in the activities of GAA Clubs in the late Autumn/Winter period when Club playing action was over. Nowadays it’s at that time things get really going so Sor has suffered and unfortunately at Adult level there’s very little interest. Getting a ‘right time’ for Scor is nigh impossible. The East Cork Final is on in Lisgoold on this coming Saturday night March 9th but we’ll probably just have a Trath na gCeist (Question Time) team

 JUVENILE CLUB FOUNDATION COURSE.

NHL

Best of luck to Cork hurlers who face the Faithful County in Tullamore on Sunday next at 1.15. A win on Sunday and then a victory in Wexford would ne a great finish in a Legue where we started so slowly. If Cork can finish in the Top 3 in their Group they’ll be guaranteed Division 1 status in next years NHL.

DAN McCARTAN.

The death occurred this week of one of the greatest ever Gaelic Footballers, Dan McCartan of Down. A member of the Down team that made the breakthrough by becoming the first team from the ‘Six Counties’ to win the Sam Maguire Cup Dan won three All Ireland Senior Medals and played with Down from 1958 until 1975. He continued to play Club Football into his 50’s and also starred with Ulster in the Railway Cup. He was brother  Of Jim who played on the Down side with him and uncle of later Mourne County star ‘Wee’ James Mc Cartan. Dan was a real legend of Gaelic Football and after he finished playing served his native county as both a selector and manager. May he rest in peace.

UNDER 8’s ON THE GO AGAIN FOR 2024.

They say in Irish ‘Mol an Oige agus tiocfaidh siad’ (Praise the youth and they’ll flourish)  well our Under 8s are back training on Wednesday evenings at  18:30 and Saturday mornings at 10:00. Both hurling and football are catered for.  Any new family in the parish that has players  or potential players born in 2016 please do bring them along to the GAA grounds if they would like to give it a go. CHRISTY RING -45 years gone.

There was a fine gathering of friends and relations of Christy Ring present in Cloyne on Saturday evening last to mark the 45th Anniversary of the Maestro’s death. Avril Geary and Pat Horgan placed a wreath on the grave and Christy Junior spoke on behalf of the Ring family. Fr Donal Leahy celebrated the mass at 6pm for Christy. East Cork GAA officials did the readings and Prayers of the Faithful whilst Avril Geary addressed the congregation at the end of the ceremony. Refreshment were served afterwards in Harty’s Bar.
