GAA, Camogie & Ladies Football -Unity?

With a few years now attempts have been made -and are ongoing in an effort to unite the GAA, The Camogie Association and Ladies Gaelic Football  Association as one. It’s big task but there seems to be goodwill from all sides. It wasn’t always so!  In May 1933 the Official GAA Weekly newspaper ‘An Caman’ carried a report of the  ‘Camoguidheacht Congress’ which was held in Jury’s Hotel in Dublin. The Hon. President Miss M. Gill gave an address covering all aspects of the Association’s work.  In reference to ‘Our Relations With The GAA’ the following was reported. “The speaker referred to the Association’s relations with the GAA and said it was generally thought that they were in Affiliation with that Organisation.  That was not so.  They had many friends in the GAA and were in association with it and other Irish Ireland organisations. They were however independent, and experience had proved that it was better to pursue such a course. Their   movement must at all times be a national one, and this should be borne in mind by those who play the game”

OSKARS FEVER IN ARMAGH.

The little hamlet of Silverbridge and surrounding districts will be empty on next Saturday night as 1100 locals gather in the GAA Club Hall for their first ever Night at The Oskars. At present the Club are undertaking a development costing around £300,000. They are building a huge state-of-the art gym mainly being constructed using the Club’s own voluntary labour. Their present hall can seat 900 people and the upstairs Bowls Room a further 200. The home of incoming (next month) GAA president Jarlath Burns, the Silverbridge Club expect the Oskars to raise huge finance for their building project.

The Films in contention for honours on Saturday night are ‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘Fr Ted’ , ‘The Field’, ‘Derry Girls’, ‘In The Name Of The Father’, ‘The Snapper’ and ‘Braveheart’. The judging panel includes Marty Morrissey and it promises to be a gala night in South Armagh.

WALK OVER IN 1904.

In the early years of the GAA Tournaments were hugely important. When Rathcormac (Football) and Bartlemy (Hurling) affiliated teams in the 18880’s Tournament involving up to twelve teams were normal.  Mighty Tournaments were held back then in Rathcormac, Glenville, Ballyhooley and Little Island. Into the early years of the 1900’s these Tournaments were still a prominent feature of GAA activities in Cork.  On Sunday November the 8th 1903 the Rathcormac hurling team were down to play the famous Dungourney team of Jamesy Kelleher in the Riverstown Tourament .The match was fixed for half 1 to be followed at 2.30 by Killeagh v Midleton.  The game wasn’t played for some reason and was refixed for Sunday December 6th, to be played with a football  match Youghal v O Briens.  These games went off again and on  Thursday December 31st an add was on The Cork Examiner read  “GAA, great matches at Riverstown on Sunday 3rd January; O Briens1 v Youghal1 and Rathcormac 1 v Dungourney1; hour- 1.30 and 2.45, referee J. McAuliffe” It wasn’t however a case of  ‘third time lucky’ as the games went off again. On Monday January the 4th the Examiner carried a report that  the “ matches were announced for yesterday but Dungourneyin one and Youghal in the other wrote that they could not attend and  the fixtures fell through”  It appears that after that the Riverstown Tournament Committee threw in the towel on the matter! The only other two games on record played by the Rathcormac hurlers in 1904 were both in the Ballyhooley Tournament on April 17th and October 2nd -both games were against Ballyhooley-unfortunately we have no results from these matches.

 CORK v CLARE.

The first ever Munster Hurling Final I attended was in 1972 in Thurles. Cok had a very easy win over Clare that day on a scoreline of 6 18 to 2 8. Aman better known for his no-nonsense defending, Jackie O Gorman from Cratloe scored two points for the banner that day from Midfield.  Gorman would go on to win two National League medals with the great Clare team of the mid to late 1970’s – a team that included Durack, Stack, Hehir, Callinan and Loughnane The Banner were unlucky in Munster to meet the Cork side en route to winning the 3 in a row 1976 to 1978 All Irelands. O Gorman who played Senior for Clare from 1967 until 1979. He was married to Joan Bennis, sister of Richie and Phil who were on the 1973 all Ireland winning team.  Jackie O Gorman died on Monday January 21st aged 80.  May he rest in peace

SYMATHY.

The Bride Rovers Club extend it’s deepest sympathy to the O Sullivan family of Hollyhill, Bartlemy on the death of Mike.  A family that has supported the Bride Rovers Club for three generations, the O Sullivans were heartbroken at the sudden death of Mike who was a great local character and a popular figure with young and old.  We also extend sympathy to the Leahy family in Ballynoe on the death of their mother Kathleen. Kathleen, nee Keohane, was a native of Moulane, Rathcormac and sympathy is also tendered to her brother Johnny in Fermoy, a great supporter of Fermoy and Bride Rovers GAA Clubs. May Kathleen rest in peace.
