Action all the way..
It used to be traditionally All Ireland Hurling Final weekend but now the first days of September mean Club game aplenty. On what was another action-packed weekend on all fronts our three hurling teams had important dates in the Diary to determine their season’s future for 2023. As it turned out the Junior C hurlers third group game against Russell Rovers was declared void as neither team could progress in the Championship. As a result of St Itas and Sars drawing 1 19 apiece in O Connell Park, Cobh on Friday night in the their Round Robin game our continuance in the Junior A championship was assured. Then on Saturday night at Riverstown our Senior Hurlers won their third Group game, and emerged as on of the two Clubs going straight to the semi finals. On Sunday then we were involved in 6 games across grades and codes - never a dull moment!
THIRD SEMI.
At a sun-splashed Sarsfields pitch in Riverstown on Saturday evening we took on Inniscarra in our Third Round Robin game in the Cork County Senior A hurling Championship. Having defeated both Na Piarsaigh and Killeagh we were guaranteed at least a Quarter Final place in the competition. Inniscarra, on the other hand, having won the PIHC last yar after thirty years of trying were in trouble. They’d lost their opening games so it was a do or die game for them. In the games Killeagh and Na Piarsaigh they were missing several ‘Down Under’ players but last Saturday they had their full 2022 County winning side on duty. Having just come up Senor for the fit time ever in their long history the Mid Cork side were determined to avoid an early relegation battle. It was a glorious evening with a 6.30 start and a perfect playing surface. When we met Inniscarra in the 2003 County Intermediate Final Darragh Holland was one of their key players. His son Padraig opened the scoring on Saturday night with a point before Ronan O Connel scored a beauty. After some great work by Kieran Kearney, Shane O Connor and Brian Roche Innicarra conceded a sideline puck. Up stepped Conleith Ryan and he split the posts and we were ahead. McCarthy from a free and David O Keeffe from play saw us 0 3 to 0 2 in arrears. It was a scrappy start with no real pattern to the play. Adam Walsh changed all that with two points from frees and also a 65. Our defence settled well and the forwards and middlemen began to click. A one-two- three passing movement involving Cillian Tobin, Ronan and Josh ended with the Monananig man raising a green flag. Though we were reduced to fourteen on the field the momentum was with us. Adam was in great scoring form from frees and thus we led by 1 10 to 0 5 at the break having played with a strong sun in our defenders eyes. Two early white flags from Adam and Brian Roche gave us a ten point lead. Just before the break Holland had close in free, many thought he’d try for a major but no, he settled for point. Then three minutes into the second half he stepped up to a free here at the dressing-room side -green flag. In fairness our lads weren’t’ ruffled and with paddy O Flynn and Eoin Roche controlling the backline we hurled very well. Our lead was up and down -we scored six points during the rest of the game and ‘Scarra got seven.it was a game we never looked like losing , yet we never looked like winning easily either. The finger-top pundits were keeping a scrolling eye on other results. At one stage Nnewcestown looked likely winners over Courceys- if the won by three points more than us we’d have to settle for a quarter final. Courceys won so we’re into a semi final. The second half seemed endless but William Finnegan, Loie Roche and David Barry all came on for a game that ended Bride Rovers 1 18 Inniscarra 1 12, in the 2003 IHC final it was 1 15 to 1 5.
It’s mighty to be in the semi final but our discipline must be tightened up if we are to progress to the Final. Team & Scorers C. Hogan, C. Hazlewood, P.O Flynn D. Cashman, K. Kearney, E. Roche, S. Well done to all the lads and Liam Barry, pat Walsh and all their helpers. It will be the end of September before the semi final game against Cloyne or Blarney who’ll meet next week. It’s great to have a few weeks of a run-up to a county semi final especially if the weather is good.
JUNIOR A HURLERS.
We had a few interested spectators from the Club amongst the fine crowd in Cobh on Friday night when Sars and St Itas played a drawn game in our Group in the East Cork JAHC. The outcome of the group is that Sars have 1 point, both St Itas and ourselves have three. Therefore on the basis of St Itas beating us we go into a quarter final and this game will be v Killeagh, the weekend after next, September 16th or 17th. The venue has not yet ben announced. In our first year up A grade it’s great to make the knockout stages. It’s Killeagh’s second team and remember their third XV gave us a good game in the B grade Final last year.
JUNIOR C HURLING
With both ourselves an d Russell Rovers not having a chance to progress in the Championship-Midleton and Dungourney qualified from our Group, last Sunday’s match in Midleton was declared void. Thanks to all who played in the League and Championship and to the team management. This year the C team saw many young players playing at adult level for the first time which will improve hurling in the Club

BUSY PITCH.
Last Sunday was a marathon day in terms of games in the Pitch. While the under 11 girls were away to Castlelyons in camogie the under 6 girls were at home to Inch for ladies Football. At 11am our Senior ladies lost to Mourneabbey in the Senior Ladies Football Championship. The girls weren’t long off the field when the hurlers of Kilworth and Ballinhassig met in a vital PIHC game. Ballinhassig started the game Topping The table, lost to Kilworth and are now out of the Championship. To finish off a Super Sunday Castlelyons B grade hurlers had two points to spare over Lisgoold. Thanks to all who helped and to the Catering Committee for much needed sustenance
UNDER 7’s IN MALLOW.
Our under7s travelled to Mallow last Saturday morning for Rebel Og Go-Games football blitz. We had 3 teams on the day, everyone got stuck in from the get go and played lovely football in all the games. This coming Saturday morning we head to St.Catherine’s in Ballynoe for a hurling blitz. Training continues Wednesday evening 18:30 and Saturday mornings at 10. Parents, if you want to send your son (born 2016) down to the Pitch to try it out before the end of the season do bring him along and guaranteed he’ll enjoy the experience.
UNDER 9’s v St Finbarrs.
The under 9 boys played St Finbarrs in a hurling blitz last weekend. All these young players were born in 2014. Since they started learning the game a few years back they have improved immensely. It was just great to see the future stars of the Rovers and The Barrs meeting for great fun activity.
UNDER11’s BUSY
The Under 11s are in the middle of a busy September. We visited St. Catherines twice in four days, the first occasion to play football and the second in hurling. Two great days of games against a good St. Catherines side provided a stern test for the lads. Last Saturday evening, we played a game against Inniscarra at half time in the senior game between both sides in the Sars grounds at Riverstown. It was great for the Under11s to share a pitch with the seniors and to be rubbing shoulders with their idols, on the pitch in front of a huge crowd, in the middle of championship season. To see the Bride Rovers Seniors advance to the County semi final was just great for the lads.
Next Saturday September the 9th sees the under11s go on tour as we head for Ardclough GAA in Kildare for some hurling matches. Following the games, we head to the big smoke and onto GAA HQ for a stadium tour of Croke Park.
The Hurling Club in Ardclough GAA was founded in 1948 and has enjoyed many successes to date. The club had great success in Senior Hurling in the county through the 60’s , 70’s and 80’s claiming 10 Senior Hurling titles in that time and going on to achieve “five in a row” in 1979 to 1983. One of the most successful years was in 2006, when the club won Minor, Intermediate & Senior Hurling Championship titles. The Seniors then progressed on to win the 2006 Leinster Intermediate Hurling Championship, making Ardclough the first Kildare club to achieve that success. In 2017 Ardclough were crowned Senior Hurling Champions again for the 13th time. Ardclough players have a proud tradition of representing their club on Kildare Hurling Teams, with great success over this time. We thank the club and all the parents for their support in making this happen. On Sunday week September 17th, we visit Moycarkey Borris in County Tipperary to take part in a memorial blitz. Moycarkey Borris are one of the most famous Clubs in the Premier County having won 14 County Senior Hurling Titles. The last weekend of September sees us host the Jer Kenny tournament also, so a lot on the calendar over the coming weeks.
UNDER 13’s BACK IN ACTION.
The Under13s had no game this week. Next game is Football at home to St Colman’s (Cloyne/Russell Rovers) on this Friday September the 8th at 7 in Pynes. A win should get us to a League Final.
UNDER 15’s DEFEAT BALLYGIBLIN.
The under15s had a busy week with their final round of the group stage for their Division 1 championship. The boys had already qualified for the semi-finals but the match on Friday was against an (up until then) undefeated Ballygiblin to decide who topped the group. The boys worked hard in the first half, putting pressure on Ballygiblin all over the pitch and went in at the break 3-13 to 0-3 ahead. Both sides made substitutions at half-time and it proved to be a more intense second half with Bride Rovers winning on a scoreline of 4-19 to 1-9. The semi-final is scheduled for next Monday 11th Sep at home in Pairc na Bríde. KILDINAN ATHLETICS.
From 1938 to 1952 and again in the 1960’s KIldinan Athletic Club was to the fore in Cork. Highlight of the Club’s history was winning the All Ireland Junior Cross Country title in 1943. This great achievement along with the deeds of so many athletes and Club officials will be remembered next Sunday. A Commemorative Monument will be unveiled at The Pound on Sunday. The event will commence at half 6 and will conclude with refreshments inn The Rathcormac Inn. Everyone is welcome.

INNISKEEN WIN MONAGHAN SHC
Castleblayney Faughs were going for a 7 in a row of Monaghan Senior Hurling titles last weekend. Inniskeen Grattans, the home Club of Patrick Kavanagh caused a shock by winning on a scoreline of 1 11 to 0 13
MATCH IN PITCH.
We host Mitchelstown and Ballinora on Saturday afternoon in Intermediate FC at 2 o clock. Club members are asked to attend by 12.30 to help out.
FINAL SCRAPS..
Our last Scrap Collection for the summer took place last Friday week. Again it was a great success. Thanks to all who helped collect and bring the scrap together since last April. While huge quantities came from Bartlemy, Kildinan an Rathcormac we also got ‘donations’ from around 14 parishes all over East and North Cork and West Waterford. Mile buiochas do gach duine. Already we have had offers of more material which we will avail of. Our next collection will probably be in the Spring but in the meantime keep looking for and collecting bits and pieces. Material can be collected in the future, if needed, by contacting 087 9538077
