Club Notes... - 2023-08-28 06:50:00

Our Junior A grade footballers bowed out of the Championship at the Quarter Final stage last Sunday. The Lotto Jackpot was not won on Tuesday August 15th. Next Sunday our Junior C Hurlers take centre stage with a home Championship game.  Big news on Club Development -work on our new pitch has commenced. Bust times for Terry Broderick.

Goals win for Carrig

At a sunny but breezy Glenville park last Sunday evening our hopes for a repeat of our 2021 football glory came to an end. In the Championship quarter final we were beaten by Carrignavar after a good game.  Playing against a strong wind and the fall of ground the first half looked ominous for us as Carrig raced into a substantial lead after the first quarter. Then our lads started playing really well. With Conor Barry accurate from  frees and  urged on by the solid play of Liam Forde and team captain Tadg Lawton we got right back into the game. Conleith Ryan did great running and Josh Ahern never stopped. A goal before half time from Cian Hogan was a huge boost. We trailed by 1 10 to 1 4 at the break -having been nine points in arrears at one stage.  With the wind in the second half we tore into the match.  We reduced the margin to just three points and held Carrig scoreless for fifteen minutes.  With a little over ten minutes left we had three bad wides at a time when the game was in a tight balance. On 54 minutes we were still just four points adrift. Then wham, bang in a period of three minutes Carrig had two goals. We really pressed hard in the last few minutes but just couldn’t get the vital scores. It finished Carrig 3 12 Bride Rovers 1 10.  It was a great display and the lads showed great sprit but we simply had not enough work done at football. I firmly believe we have the talent to win another East Cork and possibly a Junior County in Football. Thanks to Terry Broderick, Donal Ryan and Richie Cahill for taking charge of the team this year. We had marvellous wins over Castlmartyr and Youghal -both games played in Ballynoe, we lost heavily to Midleton but still reached the Quarter Final best of luck to Carri in the semi final- Lsgoold, Aghada and Fr O Neills are the other semi finalists. It was great to see such a fine Bride Rovers crowd in Glenville on Sunday evening.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM AT COUNTY LEVEL.

After the absolute fixture mayhem of the last three weekends this coming weekend is like the calm before the storm. The Colleges and Divisional teams are in Senior Championship action this weekend. Then from Friday week September the 1st it’s all systems go again with the vital Round 3 Hurling Games fixed across the grades. Our game against Inniscarra is fixed for Riverstown at 6.30pm on the Saturday evening September the 2nd.  There are very many different permutations between the 3 Groups- for example if we win against Inniscarra it doesn’t guarantee us a semi final place! If both Newcestown and Carrigtwohill win and are on 6 points they have very good scoring advantages. It will all be clearer about 8 o clock on Saturday week!

JUNIOR C’s IN ACTION.

We travelled to Midleton last Tuesday for our first championship game. In the East Cork Junior C Championship Round Robin series. It was nip and tuck in the first half with some really good hurling played and at half time it was 10 pts to 9pts to Midleton. Adam Hayes pointed some great frees. Unfortunately we lost Leon to a hand injury in the first half when we were well in the game.  Nicky Kelleher, Thomas Macak, John O Sullivan and Frank O Flynn were outstanding We started brightly in the second half but Midleton got a goal and added on a few points to pull away from us adding another goal near the end finishing up winners on a scoreline of 2-18  to 0 -14pts. The scoreline did scant justice to our lads who played really well. Our next game is at home to Dungourney on next Sunday the 27th of August at 3pm main pitch. In the 1880’s Fr Barry’s Third Team were called the ‘Holy Terrors’ and in fairness our third XV are a determined bunch.

A big ‘Thank You’ to Darren Cody who did physio on the night . So come on next Sunday and let’s see a big ‘home crowd’ for the game against Dungourney.

UNDER 13’s BACK IN ACTION.

There were no games for our under13s last week. We have a football game v Lisgoold on this Friday night coming, August 25th, at 7 in the main pitch. Training continues on Wednesday nights  at 7pm.  Schools will be back next week -where has the summer gone at all?

UNDER 11’s.

It has been a mixed week for the under11s. We had 11 of our players playing up for the under12 team on Monday night against Sars. It was a tough hour as Sars had 24 boys on the age, whereas the Rovers under12 second team had only four on the age. The lads displayed heart, which they always do, and tried their best against strong opposition. This will stand to them in the long run. On Wednesday morning, we learned that our planned trip to Semple Stadium on Thursday wasn’t going to go ahead. It was very disappointing for all involved as these opportunities don’t come around too often. We can but hope that the organisation of these days by the relevant County Boards improves, as it leaves a lot of disappointed children behind when it doesn’t happen. The under11s played local rivals Castlelyons last Saturday morning in two games of hurling. With Rovers having two teams against Castlelyons one team, it allowed all our panel to get a good run out against a strong Castlelyons team. With the wind being a huge factor, both teams got some good scores, made some good hooks and blocks and in general, play was tough but fair as you'd expect in a local Derby.

Hurling training continues in the astro on Monday night at 7.30pm with football on Wednesday night at 6pm in Pynes.

Bride Rovers Referees in Football action.

Well done to Pa O'Driscoll and James Bermingham who, with their teams of linesmen and officials took charge of two County Board games last weekend.  Jamesey B oversaw Ballincollig's win over Carrigaline and Pa was ref in Nemo Rangers win over Eire Óg in the Cork Premier Senior Football Championship. Both games were played in Pairc Ui Rinn. It is great to see Jim Ryan, brother of the late, great Eamonn, support Pa and James as umpire in this important role.

Our match day committee, led by Gerard Lane and involving experienced intercounty official Raymond Hegarty, will ensure the needs of both teams are met swimmingly for this important tie.

TERRY NEVER IDLE.

From Youghal last Sunday morning to the Junior A Football game on Sunday evening club stalwart Terry Broderick is never idle. Next weekend it’s no different as Terry is back in action with Cork Masters Football team.

All senior eyes will be on Swinford, Co. Mayo next Saturday 26th August at 2.15pm when Terry and his Rebel colleagues will seek to overcome Derry with the Cork Masters Footballers in their All-Ireland semi-final fixture. Terry captained  Bride Rovers to win the East Cork and County Minor Hurling Leagues back in 1992. Six years later he was Man of The Match in Cobh when we won the East Cork JAHC. Since then Terry has played Junior C, Junior B, Junior A ,Intermediate and Senior Hurling and Junior B and Junior A Football with the Club. He has also served as a Club Officer and Selector. Earlier this year he starred in The Snapper during our very successful Oskars campaign. Best of luck on Saturday Terry.

CLUB EXECUTIVE MEETING.

Last week’s Club Executive meeting was well attended with a busy Agenda. The big news was that the development of the Ballybrowney site was about to begin. The contractors  moved in last week  and the earth-moving machinery swung into action stripping off the top soil in preparation for levelling and seeding. The Cul Camp was discussed and everyone involved was thanked for the huge effort put in during the five days. The Chairman Pa O Driscoll mentioned the new catering Committee which has been very busy helping with all the matches in the Pitch lately. The USB keys for the 7 Oskar films will be on sale shortly through the seven Producers.  Match Day Chairman reflected on the major Co Board games we hosted successfully and thanked all the Stewards- between 18 and 20 people are needed for each game. On Sunday week we host Kilworth v Ballinhassig and the following Saturday Mitchelstown v Ballinora in the IFC. Club members were thanked for helping with the car Boot Sale- next one is Sunday September 10th.

ACTION ON ALL FRONTS.

With a myriad of Juvenile games and the Junior C hurlers in home action on Sunday, this coming weekend could be classed as a normal weekend! The First weekend of September will be crazy -in a good way. On Friday the 1st Sars play St Itas in the JAHc, a game that could determine our future in the competition. The next day, Saturday September 2nd sees our Round 3 SAHC game v Inniscarra at 6.30 in Riverstown. Then on the Sunday- we used to call it All Ireland Sunday in the good old days, we have three games. At 11.30 in Midleton we play Russell Rovers in the Junior C HC. We host Kilworth  Ballinhassig at 2pm and then we have Castlelyons v Lisgoold in the East Cork Junior BHC at 6.30, never a dull moment.

CORRIN  NATURE RESERVE.

Well done to John Howard and his Committee in Corrin Nature Reserve for their wonderful Sunflower Day on Sunday last. With the funds going to Marymount and the development of the amenity it was a marvellous day

A local Committee has been formed to adequately commemorate Kildinan Athletic Club which  was in existence from 1938 until 1952 and again briefly in the 1960’s. A suitable monument to remember their deeds is to be erected shortly at the Pound in Kildinan.
