 SENIOR HURLING V TALLOW.

On Friday night last our senior hurlers played Tallow in a tournament sponsored by Mike Prendergast who was home from America for the game. With the pitch, named after the late, great Ned Power, in great condition, a superb game of hurling was played out on a beautiful sunny evening.

The Rovers played some good hurling in the opening half, passing the ball well with some great movement. The first  half  finished with the Rovers leading 0-14 to 0-07. Bride Rovers scores coming from Paddy o Flynn, Shane O Connor, Ed Cashman, William Finnegan, Conor Barry, Adam Walsh and Ronan O Connell.

Into the second half and the concession of frees and some great scores saw Tallow come storming back into the game and eventually win. The final score was Bride Rovers 0-21 Tallow 1-20.  Team: C Hogan, D.Barry, S.Walsh, J.Mannix, P. O Flynn, A Buckley, S O Connor, R O Connell, J Ahern, DJ Cahill, K Kearney, W Finnegan, A Walsh, C Barry, E Cashman, T O Sullivan, L Forde, A Hayes, S Knox, J O Keeffe.

REBEL OG UNDER 14 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Bride Rovers under14 hurlers s played their championship first round match on Wednesday 25th May away from home against neighbours Watergrasshill.  This was the team's second encounter against Watergrasshill and despite putting in a fantastic performance the scoreline painted a different (and unfair) picture. The saying goes that ‘goals win games’ and unfortunately Watergrasshill got the goals that mattered in this game although our boys put up a fine score and the ebb-and-flow of the game suggested two evenly matched teams, despite those Watergrasshill goals.  In the first half Watergrasshill got off to a flying start and had 2-1 scored within the first five minutes.  The boys edged their way back into it and for periods of that first half retained some great possession with some clever interplay and running off the shoulder. Throughout that half though every time the boys crept back closer to Watergrasshill, a sucker punch of a goal was scored.  That said, at half time this game was up for grabs.  In the second half the pattern was consistent with the first: some great interplay and some fine points from the Rovers' boys with Watergrasshill creeping in for goals all the time keeping distance on the scoreboard.  The Watergrasshill goalie played his part too in nullifying most of the Rovers' goal chances.  All told, this was a disappointing result but a heartening performance with every boy performing to the best of their ability.  It's onwards now to the shield competition in hurling although another local derby awaits in football with the boys playing Castlelyons on Wednesday 01 Jun at home in Pynes.  Result: Watergrasshill 8-12 Bride Rovers 1-15.  Bride Rovers Panel: Adam Kelleher, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, David Dixon, Éanna Lyons, Jack Lynch, Cathal Barry, Garry Quirke, James Finn, James Larkin, Denis Fitzgerald, Micheál Walsh, Darragh O'Farrell, Con McCormack, Matthew Kenny,  Owen Ryan, Matthew O'Sullivan, Finn O'Driscoll, Mark Hynes.

REBEL OG UNDER 13 PREMIER 1 HURLING.

The under13 Green team had their first outing in the Premier 1 Section 2 hurling league away to Blackrock in Church Road on a glorious Saturday afternoon last. The Boys have been graded at Premier 1 Section 2 in a league with Blackrock, Carrigaline, Carrigtwohill, St. Finbarrs and Youghal.

Blackrock started with intent and had 3-05 on the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes before the Rovers realised that they were in a game. The lads then settled well and for the remainder of the match went toe to toe with the Rockies but eventually losing out on a score line of 3-10 to 1-07. There were some fine performances throughout and there is no doubt that this game will serve as a marker to the level that they need to hit from here on in. The next game in this league will be another tough challenge when they are at home to Carrigaline on Saturday 11th June at 4pm.  The team and scorers on Saturday was: Ciaran O'Donovan, Bobby Sweeney, Oliver Harris, Calum Sommers, Danny Walsh, Cathal Barry (0-01), Tadhg Cronin, Finn O'Driscoll (0-03), Mark Hynes, Matthew O'Sullivan (0-01), Micheal Walsh (1-02), Donagh Hurley, John Noonan, Sebastian Byrd, Dylan Keating, Darren Kearney, Euan O'Grady and Evan Quaine.  The U13s Green team footballers are next up in the Premier 2A Football League with their opening game at home to Erins Own on Saturday 4th June next in Pairc Na Bhride at 4pm.

UNDER 10 HURLING.

The U10s played two very close hurling games against Midleton last Saturday.  Our strong squad numbers meant that we had 27 players against their 19 which is great to see. This is becoming a regular feature, almost on a weekly basis against opposition so the enthusiasm is strong with this group of players. Midleton are a dominant force in East Cork but we have always held our own against them and this was no different. From long range scores to scores off the weaker side and from hooking and blocking to committing to rucks, this was a great hour of hurling from the boys. It is noticeable also how much development is happening with players who have had a little bit more skill development to do. They are really coming along nicely. Training: Football this Wednesday at 6pm at the main pitch. We have a weekend off from matches and training on Saturday due to the long Bank Holiday weekend.

UNDER 6 HURLING.

Twenty eight lads travelled to Dungourney on Friday night last to play Kiltha Og (Dungourney/Castlemartyr) in under 6 hurling. It’s just marvellous to see these lads proudly wearing the Green, White and Gold jersey. They are not worried about goals, points wins or losses just having fun and learning the skills of hurling. It’s great to see the progress they are making with their trainers. Well done to all involved at this age group.

UNDER 11s GOINGTO KLDARE.

Our under 11 hurlers have been invited to Celbridge in Co Kildare for an inter county Tournament. Ciarain O Donovan formerly of Bartlemy and now living in Celbridge is the main organiser and he has sent the invite to Bride Rovers. Ciarain hurled with us for many years and later played Intermediate and Senior with Celbridge.

JUNIOR A FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

The Junior A footballers played their final league game at home to Cobh on Sunday evening last and were well beaten on the night. With the league finished for this season, the focus will now turn to the Championship where the lads will be in a group of four with Cloyne, Aghada and Glenbower Rovers. Cobh are in the League Final against either Lisgoold or Carrigtwohill.

SCRAP COLLECTION.

Thanks to all those who contributed scrap metal to our collection on Saturday last. A few people have contacted us since with offers of more scrap so we will have another ‘whip around’ shortly. Please ring John at 087 9538077 (Bartlemy area) or Tom at 086 8453364 (Rathcormac area) if you have suitable material. If people are unable to bring material themselves we will endeavour to arrange collection.

CORK v LOUTH IN QUALIFIERS.

Memories of 1957 when the Wee County beat the Rebel County n the All Ireland Final will be rekindled at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday next. Cork meet Louth at 2 0 clock in the Senior Football Qualifiers. Louth are managed presently by former Tyrone boss Mickey Harte. When Louth took the Sam Maguire in ’57 the captain was singer and accordeon player Dermot O Brien.  Best remembered for ‘The Merry ploughboy’, ‘The Turfman from Ardee’ and ‘The Galway Shawl’ Dermot died in 2007 which was the last year Cork met Louth in the SFC. In Portlaoise that year Cork won a tight game by 16 points to 14.

BARTLEMY IN SCIATH NA SCOIL FINAL.

Well done to the young hurlers of Bishop O Brien NS, Bartlemy who defeated Glenville in their Sciath na Scoil semi final. Bartlemy now go on to face Leamlara in the Final. So it’s off to the Astro in Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the Final which will be played on Wednesday of next week June 8th at 12 noon. It's real 'local derby' with so many connections between the two Schools and parishes. Best of luck to all involved.

SCOUTS 40.

Well done and congratulations to the Rathcormac Scouting Unit who marked 40 years in existence this year. On Saturday last they had a Fun Day where everyone present had a great family day out with plenty, fun, games and no shortage of water!

CUL CAMP 2022.

Great news about our 2022 Cul Camp as the booking is very good. This year it will start on Monday July 25th and go on until the following Friday.  The Camp will still have to comply with all the rules and regulations for such gatherings. The planning work is ongoing. It will probably take between 50 and 70 volunteers to make the Cul camp work as smoothly as last year.

JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL.

Kerry and Antrim meet in the Jo Mc Donagh Cup final in Croke Park on Saturday next. Joe was a great hurler with Galway, who can ever forget his rendition of ‘The West’s Awake’ in 1980 when Galway won the Senior All Ireland after a gap of 57 years? Joe was President of the GAA from 1997 to 2000 and sadly died in 2016. Cork and Wexford await the results of the final on Saturday with Cork playing the winners and Wexford the losers. I was lucky to be present in Croke Park on Sunday December the 13th, 2020 when last these counties met in the Final. Antrim won that day by 0 22 to 1 17. This season Kerry are trained by Ballyduff’s Stephen Molumphy and the Koingdom will be anxious to avenge that narrow defeat. The following weekend Cork hurling fans will relish the trip to either Belfast – or perhaps Ballycastle? or down the road to Tralee.

BARTLEMY HALL AGM.

The AGM of the Bartlemy Parish Hall Committee is fixed for next Wednesday night, June 8th in the Hall at 8.30.All are welcome.

SYMPATHY.

The Bride Rovers Club extends it’s sympathy to John Baldwin and family, Quarter Lane, Rathcormac on the death of John’s uncle Tom O Donovan of Coolbeggan, Knockanore. Also our sympathy goes to the family of Bryan O Loughlin of Kanturk and Douglas. Brian was a hugely popular figure in Cork GAA. Her represented his Club Kanturk and Division, Duhallow for many years on the Board. He is best known for his trojan work as a Voluntary Steward in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. His wife Bernadette passed away just last December so this a terrible blow for his son Bryan, daughter Carol, grandchildren and his brother Mick. May he Rest in Peace.
