A New Year..

Well the New Year of 2021 is here and let's all hope it's a good one. Few will be sorry to see the back of last year with all it brought. Our first thoughts for this month of January is that everyone stays safe and well. With the ferocious third wave of covid sweeping the country it's vital for the entire community to comply with the restrictions in place as regards travel, work, social distancing and general safety. Once again as a community based GAA Club we are available to help if help is needed. It might be to collect groceries or medicine or just check on people's fuel supply. If help is required  please ring 087 2070100 or 086 7710766. Ni neart go chur le chéile.

Remember, if you have any of the following symptoms; Fever, A Cough, Shortness of Breath or Breathing Difficulties, please contact your GP for advice. Remember that it is important to check in with elderly family members and neighbours to make sure that they are all safe, fit and healthy. All of us have a personal responsibility in an effort to reduce Covid-19 so play your part in our local community by protecting  yourself and everyone around you.

Club Annual General Meeting.

The Club AGM  will be held on next Monday  January the  11th at 8pm on what is called an 'On Line Platform' .Due to Covid 19 it will not be possible to hold an indoor AGM in the manner we are used to . The Secretary's report will be published on the club website www.briderovers.ie  for viewing from Sat 9th.

Due to the new format for the AGM any questions relating to relevant matters will have to be submitted to the Runai, secretary.briderovers.cork@gaa.ie in advance of the meeting.  It seems very complicated but in reality so many people used Zoom and other on-line providers for matches and meetings during the last twelve months so it's now very user-friendly.

WELL DONE BRIAN & EOIN.

It might have been the night before Christmas Eve but that didn't lessen the joy of the Rovers on December 23rd when Cork won the Munster under 20 Hurling Championship. On a perfect sod at Pairc Ui Chaoimh Cork had a deserved win over old and ancient rivals Tipperary. Our own Roche brothers, Eoin in defence and Brian in attack played vital roles in the Rebels win. Well done lads on a superb victory. By now Cork had hoped to be getting ready for the All Ireland Final against the Leinster champions. Unfortunately covid has put a brake on all under age GAA affairs so we just don't know when and where and if the Final will get played. Hopefully it will and give Cork a chance to win an All Ireland Title. Mighty to see Bride Rovers, the Hill, Ballygiblin, Kilworth and Castlemartyr all well represented on the Cork team.

2021  CORK GAA MEMBERS DRAW.

'Rebels Bounty' is the new name for the Cork GAA Annual Members Monthly Draw. It was to have had a gala re-launch in October but unfortunately along with so many other events this function had to go.

Rebels' Bounty will instead be launched in late 2020 / early 2021 and a meeting of Cork County Board, which will be devoted solely to this item, will be held when circumstances allow. The Draw is still a monthly draw costing €10 a month to enter or a once-off payment of €100. This year there will be 30 prizes each month. The minimum First Prize each month will be €20,000 with prizes of €25,000 in December and April and in August 2021 the first prize is €100,000. Speaking at the launch of Rebels’ Bounty Kevin O’Donovan, CEO/Secretary Cork GAA commented “Following from the launch of One Cork we are now delighted to official announce details of Rebels’ Bounty, marking the beginning of a new fundraising era for Cork Clubs. We have increased the prize fund to ensure maximum return for our members, with 30 prizes monthly. We listened to our members and all 30 prizes are now in cash. 2020 has been a unique and difficult year for our clubs and I’m delighted to launch this appeal allowing clubs to raise vital funds at a time when it is extremely hard to do so.”

Bride Rovers Club is encouraging members, players and supporters to join the Draw. Tickets can be had from Club Officers or contact our Runai Daniel Lane at 087 2070100.

DOWN MEMORY LANE. -1989.

Thirty two years ago as the 1980's drew to a close we reached our second ever Junior B Grad Football Final; Our under 14 hurlers reached their Championship final also. The Headline on the Paper on September 28th of that year was 'Rovers Leave It Too Late' -it was in reference to our under 16 footballers. They played Carrigtwohill in the championship in Rathcormac. It was a virtual 'game of two halves'. Though we had several good chances in the opening half we trailed by a massive 3 10 to a single point at the break. A Pat Walsh goal saw us get completely on top in the second period but Colm McCarthy and Kieran Fitzgerald were denied further goals by the upright in Kieran's case,  Colm's shot just went over the bar. We dominated the last ten minutes and bombarded the Carrig defence. They added just 1 2 to their tally while we managed 1  4 with several wides. The Rovers team was M. Drinan, M. Walsh, L Barry, P. McHugh, E. Murphy, M. Walsh, P. Walsh, S. Nolan, C. McCarthy, P. Barry, T. Broderick, J.O Dowd, J. Donovan, K.Dorgan,  K.Fitzgerald, J. O Callaghan, M. O Connell, K. O Donoghue.

The Under 14 hurlers beat Watergrasshill 38 to 2 1 and then defeated Carrig by 4 3 to 4 1 in the semi final before losing to Killeagh in the Final. The lineout v Watergrasshill was E.Hoskins D Barry A Broderick P Mc Hugh B Murphy M Walsh J Murphy J O Callaghan P Barry K Fitzgerald D Regan N Hegarty DO Donovan M Drinan B McHugh.

At Junior B Football level we had two great games with Castlelyons in the month of July. On July 17th in Glenville we met in the East Cork Divisional Final of the County Junior B Grade Championship. A late Ger Sheedy goal helped Castlelyons to a 5 point win. We met again on July 27th in Ballynoe, this time in the semi final of the 'ordinary' East Cork JBFC. We were missing Paudie Collins for this game as he was out of the country while Castlelyons had Declan  Spillane and Tom Carroll back from injury. Two penalties were awarded by ref John Motherway in the first six minutes.  Pat Mannix saved from Mick Spillane but Mick netted the rebound. Straight away at the other end we got a spot kick and Hugh Kelleher raised the green flag.  We got on top then and kicked four points to lead by 1 4 t 10 at the short whistle after playing with the breeze. A point from play and two Mick Spillane frees had our lead down to a single score. We added two points-one from wing back John Joe Barry, and near the end Andrew O Flynn got a great goal to lave us winners by 2 6 to 1 3.  We had to wait ten weeks for the Final in which Aghada beat us by a point 1 7 t 1 6. Team v Castlelyons; P Mannix, B Hogan T Kearney, M Kearney O O Connor A Cahill, JJ Barry, B O Connell JA Murphy B Hazlewood T Mulcahy M Hogan D Mulcahy D Ahern, H Kelleher A O Flynn M O Flynn.  Castlelyons team; A Barry G O Regan A O Regan S Barry C Murphy D Buttimer D Spillane W O Riordan M Spillane D Sheehan N Kearney T Carroll G Sheedy J Tobin M O Riordan A Crowley J Hartnett. The J Hartnett on the Castlelyons team was Joe and we send our sympathy to Joe and all the Hartnett family on the death of their father Moss, a legend in East Cork sport, who died recently.

DOWN THE YEARS.

In the Cork county Senior Hurling Championship for 1937 a team named 'St Colmans' was entered. This team was drawn from players in East Cork- a forerunner of the later Imokilly teams. In that year's Co SHC in Midleton St Colmans were well beaten by a crack Glen Rovers team on a scoreline of Glen Rovers 10  4 St Colmans 3 0- lads what would the hurlers of those days think of today's game with 30 and 35 points being scored in a game? On that St Colmans team were Ml O Brien, Jimmy O Brien, Con Collins, Ml Cranitch,  Joe Healy and Jack Barry -all Bride Rovers players.

In 1938 Lismore won the Waterford County Junior Hurling Championship. On the team was a John O Brien from Rathcormac who, at the time, was working as a trainee Chemist in Hanrahans in Lismore. This was probably Jimmy or Jackie O Brien of the Rathcormac Victualler family. J O Brien also lined out for Bride Rovers that year but then again Lismore was a long way away from the banks of the Bride!

SYMPATHY.

The Bride Rovers Club extends deepest sympathy to Nicholas Forde and Marie Cosgrove nee Forde on the death of their uncle Paddy Forde formerly of Glenville.
