We play Courcey Rovers in Round 3 of the Cork Senior Hurling championship. This will be the first time we've met Courceys at Senior level. Our only previous championship clash with the Ballinaspittle side was in the first round of the County Junior Hurling in 1968 when Courceys, then in in the Carbery Division defeated us in the Athletic Grounds. We've both lost two games in this years championship so next Sunday presents the last opportunity to progress in the SHC this year. On the last day of May we met Carrigtwohill in a repeat of last years first round game. That night in Riverstown we made a blistering start with two goals. Unfortunately in the ten minutes before the break and again after the restart Carrig scored a string of points to build up a ten point lead. Like last year we battled hard but ended up being beaten by five points. In Round 2 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh we were simply outclassed by Sarsfields. We were beaten on a scoreline of 2  25 to   0  15 though we could easily have scored three goals. It's hard to suffer a heavy defeat like that but in fairness the lads are really up for Sundays game and the training has gone well. Courceys lost to Ballymartle in the first round and lost to Bishopstown on Saturday night last. They were level at 0  8 apiece with 42 minutes gone on Saturday night but Bishopstown finished strongly to win. Courceys are a battle hardened team and like us wont want to be in a relegation dogfight. On the positive side going in to Sundays game the injury worries we had before the last round have cleared up but indiscipline means we are short a player from our forward division. Since our elevation to Senior ranks we have faced some mighty challenges and Sunday will be no different. We need to improve our scoring tally undoubtedly and we simply have to cut down on the number of frees we concede. It's going to be a huge task to win on Sunday but we are capable of doing so. Go for it lads, the parish is behind ye. Lets have mighty vocal support ion  Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday. The game is timed for 2 .30 and will be followed by Killeagh v Na Piarsaigh.

 

Our dreams of contesting a County Football final for the first time since the 1890's were shattered at Cloughduv on Saturday night. Kilmeen defeated us on a scoreline of 2  12 to 2  9. The scoreline shows a deficit of three points but we were chasing the game from the start. Two first half goals gave Kilmeen a comfortable lead and after half time when we threatened to get right back into the game we gave away silly frees - moved forward on many occasions by the referee. It was only in the last quarter of an hour that we really got on top. Our forwards began to run at the Kilmeen defence. Two goals from Cian O Connor brought us into contention but time caught up with us in the end. Our display proved one thing for sure. This is a County Championship that we are well capable of winning if we really put our mind to it. Now for the 2104 season we still have an East Cork B Grade football championship to play for where Cloyne will be our first round opponents.

Last  week’s draw took place in Barry's Bar on Tuesday July 15th  for a jackpot of €2,400.
The  four numbers drawn were 4/11/17 & 25 and there was no jackpot winner.

Tickets for the weekly Lotto Draw are priced at just  € 2 each and can be purchased from Club members. They are also available in local business outlets  and online at locallotto.ie Support for the weekly Lotto is vital and greatly appreciated as the costs involved in running a GAA Club are increasing all the time. As well as the day to day costs we are planning more major Development work in Pairc na Bride in 2014 so finance is always needed. We are always looking for new Lotto Ticket sellers so if you could sell even a few tickets each week it would be of great benefit to the Club.

  

The Parish Development Fund hold a Car Boot Sale on Sunday next July 27th. With the Senior game in the afternoon it will be a busy day. If you can give even an hour to help it will be appreciated so please contact any committee member. A reminder that goods for the parish stall will be accepted on Saturday morning the 26th.

 

Two years ago the bye-laws of Cork County Board were changed to allow two clubs to amalgamate at under 21 level. The idea was that clubs who simply did not have enough players aged between 17 and 21 could join together to form a single team. It was to be expected that such amalgamations would then be graded A at under 21 level- after all the pick of two clubs surely has an advantage over a single club, but now we have a farcical situation where combination teams are regularly allowed take part in the B grade. WE played Killeagh/Itas last week in the u21 B championship and were beaten by 19 points. We still have 12 of this team underage next year but if clubs who amalgamate -as they are quite entitled to do, remain in the lower grade what chance will 'single' club teams have in the future?  The introduction of a C grade at u  21 level is not a real solution. This was tried a few years ago but the only way forward I believe is a simple guideline that combination teams compete at the top grade.
